The theme for the Photobird Photo Contest for June was “Friends”. As you can see from the contest entries, friends came from far and wide to share their variety of photos of friends. Thanks to everyone who entered the contest!
Congratulations to Anais, winner of the Photobird Award, for her entry “Mabel & Anais“! We admired her photo earlier this month as we exclaimed Mabel and Anais “Best Friends Forever“.
This winning photo works well for several reasons. First, it’s a close-up, which is almost always a great approach. Photographers often strive to “fill the frame”, which Anais did, and this lends the photo to be more intimate and detailed, which this photo is. Secondly, it’s a great portrait shot. My guess is the photo was taken at arm’s length, which can be difficult to compose well and difficult to get great shots with. Nonetheless, Anais’s photo came out extremely well. As we wrote earlier this year, capture personality in your portraits. There’s tons of personality in this photo, especially with their big, beautiful smiles. Perfect for a photo of friends!
Congratulations to Karen Flanders, winner of the People’s Choice Award, for her photo “Friends First Day of Summer“! Karen’s photo was also one we highlighted earlier in the month.
What stands out for me in Karen’s photo is the color in the center of the photo, especially of the kids. The colors are excellent and very well saturated, the focus on the kids is sharp and detailed, and both of those make the kids contrast well against the comparatively monotoned background. The center of the image is very clear and it’s almost like you’re there with them in the water. Finally, of course, the subject matter, the kids playing in the water, is cute.
Anais and Karen will each receive the following prizes:
