Two is mathematically greater than one. It is said that two heads are better than one. Two surfers checking out a beautiful sunset makes for a great photo, such as the photo shown above by David Cresine. Click the photo above to see a larger version.

Photobird Photo Contest Winners for May

June 1, 2009

Thank you to everyone who entered the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2009! The theme for May was “One” and everyone entered great photos into the contest. The contest featured more than one bird, more than one flower, and one silly kitty!

Congratulations to Fiona Lanzino, winner of the Photobird Award with the photo “‘one’derfully messy toddler!” shown above. I wrote about the photo and its cute subject just a few days ago. I also pointed out that the composition of the photo is very well-done as it just focuses on the foot, the brush, and the wall. I like the vibrant colors in the photo and the exposure level makes everything clear. Click the photo above to see a larger version.

Congratulations to Ann, winner of the People’s Choice Award with the photo “Feed Me” which captures the rarely seen event of a baby bird with its beak open asking its parent for food. Ann snapped the shutter at just the right time to capture the open beak. The bottom of the fence and the top of the grass are positioned using the Rule of Thirds which results in good composition.

Fiona and Ann will each receive the following prizes:

Congratulations again to both winners!

One and done for May! You all know what comes after the number one. “Two” is the theme for the Photobird Photo Contest for June 2009. The Photobird Photo Contest is free to enter, so be sure to get your entry in and have your friends vote on their favorite photos before month’s end.

3 Days Left: Photo Contest for May

May 29, 2009

There’s only 3 days remaining until the end of the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2009 with the theme “One”. Enter the contest here. The contest is always free to enter and this month’s contest ends Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 11:59pm Pacific time.

Fiona Lanzino entered into the contest this cute photo entitled “‘one’derfully messy toddler!” and explains in the description: “My little daughter was sitting on a chair foot painting up the wall in her messy art class. She decided it would be much more fun to paint one foot!” Yes, of course! The bottom of her foot is getting paint on it, so I bet she’s thinking, “I’ll paint the top too!” Besides, I’m sure looking at the top of her unpainted foot on top of the painted wall ruins the whole painting experience and makes her lose her creative focus! The wall is painted; therefore, the foot must be too! The paint and the brush probably feel good too. Yep, she definitely knows what she’s doing. She’s got it all figured out.

The composition on this photo is very well-done: focusing on the foot, the brush, and the wall. Click the photo to see a larger version.

1 Week Left: Photo Contest for May

May 22, 2009

“Joined as ONE”

There is only 1 week remaining until the end of the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2009 with the theme “One”. Enter the contest here. The contest is always free to enter and this month’s contest ends Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 11:59pm Pacific time.

I like this photo shown above entitled “Joined as ONE” by Ramon Prince. Although at first glance you might say it’s just a nice sculpture, there appears to be a few significant considerations taken when the photo was shot to ensure it looked its best.

  • The hardwood surface works well as a background because (1) it fills the entire frame of the photo, (2) the wood provides a natural feeling to the photo, as opposed to something else such as metal or something synthetic such as vinyl, and (3) the color of the wood and the variation of its texture provides a great contrast from the solid white of the sculpture.
  • The sculpture appears to be lit by natural light coming through the window. Natural light is generally preferred over artificial light.
  • The curtains on the window cast a variant shadow on the sculpture and on the hardwood, adding more dynamism, texture, and depth to the sculpture and to the photo.
  • Including the entire shadow of the sculpture in the photo adds additional depth to the photo and to the sculpture.

The sculpture looks really cool too. Click the photo to see a larger version.

2 Weeks Left: Photo Contest for May

May 15, 2009

“One male cardinal”
© Copyright Chris Gorhum

The photo shown above entitled “One male cardinal” by Chris Gorhum is a great photo. Click the photo to see a larger version. I like how Chris Gorhum uses a shallow depth of field to make the cardinal stand out against the blurred background. I also think it helps immensely that the background is generally green, without browns, blacks, blues, or white colors that you might find in similar settings. The uniform color helps with the composition. The red color of the bird is fantastic. Finally, perhaps the best part of the photo is the curious attitude the bird seems to have.

Chris Gorhum won the Photobird Award for the Photobird Photo Contest for April 2009 with her photo entitled “goldfinch“. As the contest rules state, winners are ineligible to win the same award within 12 months; therefore, Chris Gorhum is ineligible to win the Photobird Award this month, but she can still win the People’s Choice Award if she gets enough votes from you.

3 Weeks Left: Photo Contest for May

May 8, 2009

“I am one. The only one.”

There are 3 weeks remaining until the end of the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2009 with the theme “One”. Enter the contest here. The contest is always free to enter and this month’s contest ends May 31, 2009 at 11:59pm Pacific time.

Sai Praveen entered into the contest the photo shown above entitled “I am one. The only one.“, showing a lone elephant throwing some dirt on its back, which I understand is what elephants use for sunscreen and for keeping off parasites. From the look of the wear on that area of the ground, it looks like it’s a popular place for elephants, their “powder room” so to speak. Click the photo to see a larger version.

The lighting in the photo is quite vibrant and saturated. From the look of the shadow on the left side of the elephant, the long shadow to its left, and the bright coloring of the trees, my guess is that the photo was taken late in the day, as the sun was going down, perhaps a couple of hours before sunset. I think it’s at sunset instead of at sunrise because the light at the end of the day is warmer and more red, compared to the light around sunrise, which is cooler and has a blue tint. In this photo, the coloring of the leaves, the grass, and the dirt looks very warm. Whether it’s morning or evening, they’re both great times of the day to be taking landscape pictures.

Photobird Photo Contest for May

One is the loneliest number. But maybe this one seagull shown above standing on this one pier just wanted to be alone. Maybe he, or she, just needed a break and some time away from the rest of the flock. You know how it is. Click the photo above, entitled “Seagull on pier“, to see a larger version.

Photobird Photo Contest Winners for April

May 1, 2009

“goldfinch”
© Copyright Chris Gorhum

Thank you to everyone who entered the Photobird Photo Contest for April 2009! The theme for April was “Small” and the number of photos you entered was not small at all. The contest featured photos of small birds, and a bee, a small fish and bugs, and small people too. Small animals are always a favorite and there were plenty of those.

Congratulations to Chris Gorhum, winner of the Photobird Award with the photo “goldfinch” shown above. I like the composition of her photo, as well as the clarity and sharpness. I wrote about the photo a couple of weeks ago and I praised its execution and balance. It’s an excellent photo. Birds are always a challenge to photograph and it looks like Chris definitely knows what she’s doing.

Congratulations to Angie Ng, winner of the People’s Choice Award with the photo “Please don’t eat me!” The photo shows a cold, penguin animal cracker emerging from the snow-covered dune. The cute photo is shot well with good composition and a good amount of light to make the photo work. Looks good enough to eat!

Chris and Angie will each receive the following prizes:

Congratulations again to both winners!

No small feat, but we’re done with that one and ready for another one. Let’s see who’s number one next month. “One” is the theme for the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2009. The Photobird Photo Contest is free to enter, so be sure to get your entry in and have your friends vote on their favorite photos before month’s end.

1 Week Left: Photo Contest for April

April 24, 2009

“colorful grasshopper”
© Copyright sujith. R

The photo shown above entitled “colorful grasshopper” by sujith. R is a very eye-catching photo for a couple of reasons. First, the subject — the colorful grasshopper — is quite unusual-looking, with its spectacular, iridescent legs. Secondly, the blurring of the background and foreground, whether done by shooting a narrow depth of field or by using an image editor, works very well to isolate the grasshopper and to focus our attention on it.
