5 Days Left: Photo Contest for June

June 26, 2009

There’s only 5 days remaining until the end of the Photobird Photo Contest for June 2009 with the theme “Two”. Enter the contest here. The contest is always free to enter and this month’s contest ends Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:59pm Pacific time.

I like this artistic photo shown above entitled “Tuzgölü” that was entered into the Photobird Photo Contest for June 2009 by Laszlo Nemeth. This photo has a lot of good things in it. I like the horizon line at the top of the Rule of Thirds. I like the relative clarity of the foreground, where you can see the texture of the sand — or salt. The two people in the distance give a very nice perspective to the photo. I like how the sky imitates the color of the water that would be in the lake if the lake had water in it.

If I’m not mistaken, my keen Google skills and my rusty Turkish (I don’t know any) tell me that Tuzgölü is a salt lake in Turkey in or near Ankara. “Tuzgölü” may even be the literal translation for “salt lake”. Hey, according to this Wikipedia entry, it looks like I’m correct!

Laszlo Nemeth won the People’s Choice Award for the Photobird Photo Contest for February 2008 with the photo entitled “Morning at the lake“, another great photo of a lake.

“Me and the Dog”, by Vicki Tinnon

April 30, 2009

“Me and the Dog” © Copyright Vicki Tinnon

I like the orange-yellow tint and the serenity of this photo shown above entitled “Me and the Dog” by Vicki Tinnon. The sunset’s color and the reflection of the sky in the water adds a beautiful, ethereal quality to the photo. I also like that “the Dog” is at attention, as if something to the right of the frame has alerted it. That look adds an active quality to the photo, in which we’re wondering what has piqued its interest. Click the photo above to see a larger version.

Vicki Tinnon recently added this photo to her Nebraska Life photo album. Vicki Tinnon won the Photobird Award for the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2008 with her photo “Moving In“. You can see more of Vicki Tinnon’s inspiring photos in her Photobird photo album at photobird.com/vickitinnon.

June Lake, by David Cresine

November 13, 2008

“June Lake 33”

I came across David Cresine’s photo “June Lake 33” as I was looking for a photo with some autumn colors for the Photobird Photo of the Hour. (If you’d like to submit your photos for the Photo of the Hour and you don’t yet have a Photobird account, check out our free offer that ends today!)

I really like this photo a lot. In fact, on Monday when I wrote “How to Tell If Your Photo is a Great Photo“, I suggested that one way to tell is if you want to hang it on your wall. This is definitely one of those great photos.

I like the composition of the photo, with the large body of water framed by the green tree on the left, the orange-yellow tree on the right, and the mountains in the background. The colors, sharpness, and vividness in this photo are what really makes it stand out: the crisp blue sky, the calm blue-green water, and the fiery trees. My guess is that a polarizing filter, or a filter of some kind, was on the lens to enhance those colors and the scene. It’s a gorgeous shot.

You can see more of David Cresine’s beautiful landscape photos in his Photobird photo album entitled “Nature and Landscape“. All of David’s spectacular photos can be seen at photobird.com/davidroy.

Bob: Wow. I’m wiped out.

Joe: Yeah, me too.

Steve: And it’s only 10am.

Joe: I think I’ll skip the canoe today and watch the waves. And start with a beer.

Steve: Sounds good to me. I could use some more relaxation. Just like yesterday.

Bob: Yeah. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Watching the Clouds Go By

August 8, 2008

“A Morning on Crater Lake”

How very relaxing it would be right now to just recline on the lakeshore and watch the clouds go by. In a beautiful photo entitled “A Morning On Crater Lake” by Vicki Tinnon, you can almost see the puffy white clouds slowly shift and morph into different shapes between the jagged cliffs. How serene. And pleasantly relaxing.

Vicki submitted her photo into the Photobird Photo Contest for August which has the theme “Relax”. There’s plenty of time for you to submit your photo into this month’s contest. But don’t relax too much yet. Submit your photo first, tell your friends to vote for you, and then resume your position on the lakeshore. The contest is free to enter and ends on August 31.

Every monthly Photobird Photo Contest has two winners. At the end of each month, we pick one winner for the Photobird Award, and we will tally your votes to determine the one winner for the People’s Choice Award. You can see all of the previous contests and contest entries at this link.

Vicki Tinnon actually won the Photobird Award for the Photobird Photo Contest for May 2008 with her photo “Moving In“. You can see more of Vicki’s photos at http://www.photobird.com/vickitinnon/. Because Vicki won a Photobird Award within the past 12 months, she is ineligible to win the Photobird Award until May 2009, but she can still win the People’s Choice Award. Check the contest rules for more details.
