In April, Spring was just beginning. (“Spring” was the theme for the Photobird Photo Contest for April.)

In May, the flowers bloomed. (“Flowers” was the theme for May.)

In June, our friends arrived. (“Friends” was the theme for June.)

In July, it was time to play. (“Play” was the theme for July.)

In August, let’s relax. Just like John Maher’s son, shown in the photo above. John won the Photobird Award for the Photobird Photo Contest for July 2007 with his photo entitled “relaxing in the hot summer sun“.

“Relax” is the theme of the Photobird Photo Contest for August. As always, the contest is free to enter and there are two winners for each contest.

Each month we choose one Photobird Award winner for the best overall entry, and your votes are tallied to select the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

Our two winners will each receive the following fabulous prizes:

Photobird Photo Contest Winners for July

The theme for the Photobird Photo Contest for July was “Play”. Through your contest entries, you demonstrated the wide variety of activities that you enjoy doing during your play time. We saw sports with a red ball. Sports in the rain. Sailing. Parachuting. Canoeing. A few fireworks. And even some fireworks of the romantic kind. From cats too! Thanks to everyone who entered the contest!

Congratulations to Billy Atkins, winner of the Photobird Award, for his entry “Who needs fireworks“! Billy’s beautiful photo stood out early on in the contest, and I definitely agreed with him when I wrote in my blog post “Who Needs Fireworks?” Watching gorgeous sunsets sounds to me like a great way to play. In fact, I scheduled it on my calendar to remind myself not to miss it on Tuesdays, when I might be able to squeeze in some play time.

Billy’s photo is extraordinary. The color alone is amazing. There’s a great variety of color throughout the image, from the lightest color in the heavens within the clouds, to the pink and orange varieties in the sky below, to the whitish yellow sun, and the soothing color reflected on the calm waves. The silhouette of the surfer watching the sunset along with us is a nice touch, and I think the photo would not be as good without the surfer. The surfer gives the photo more impact and sets the serene mood. The vertical crop of the photo is also notably well done, encompassing the variety of colors from the sky to the sand. Gorgeous!

Congratulations to Tammy Folvarcik, winner of the People’s Choice Award, for her photo “The winning edge“! Tammy’s son, Devon, is in the photo in a go kart, giving two thumbs up, ready to tear up the pavement! I give two thumbs up for the clear exposure of the photo, shooting against the clean, unobstructed background of the pavement, the detail of the rear-mounted, high-performance, 11-horsepower engine, and of course, Devon suited up in his helmet and gloves, rarin’ to go.

Billy and Tammy will each receive the following prizes:

Congratulations again to both winners!

We’ve had some time to play, and it sure would be nice to relax a bit. “Relax” is the theme of the Photobird Photo Contest for August. The Photobird Photo Contest is free to enter, so be sure to get your entry in and have your friends vote on their favorite photos before month’s end.
